okay so i just got approved for a college student credit card. I have no credit and i want to start building it. The limit is $800 but i dont plan on spending that much. im sort of nervous about it because i love to shop so i dont want to get carried away with it. Do you have any tips or advice on ANYTHING about having a credit card? thanks :)
sure , do not use it
First off don't be late with the credit card bill because they will charge you a shit load of interest. And don't overspend because you can get in trouble for it. I would only use it if you don't have cash or check. And NEVER give your credit card information online unless you know the site is trusted. Untrusted or unsecured sites could result in identity theft and financial ruin.
always use debit and dont't charge anything
Keep it paid off in full each pay period. Otherwise the fees will cost you a fortune. Never make a late payment. Leave the card at home when you shop.
here is the advice that was given to me. DO NOT EVER USE A CREDIT CARD. When ya get applications throw them away. You end up spending a lot more than the product is worth. Intrest will kill you. Its better to save up the money for something you want rather than use a credit card.
Yes, use it often, but only if you have the money in the bank so that you can pay it off right when the bill comes in the mail (or when it comes due if you do it online) or completely know for sure that you will be able to pay it off right away. This is how my parents have always done it (and how I would have done it if we didn't constantly run into financial problems) and they have a GREAT credit score. So, use it if you're already about to pay cash for something, like gas or groceries, etc. And remember not to spend that money in the bank that has been set aside for paying off the credit card! :) This works great also if you've got a rewards account. Builds up those points real fast. And soon you will be approved for a higher credit limit. In order to build up credit, you need to use a credit card or have a loan of some sort. That's just how it is. You can't NOT have a credit card and expect to get a decent loan later.
throw it away before it's to late,, trust me on this one,,, unless u have a full time job
You do need to use the card, but as stated earlier, use it wisely. That means putting yourself on a budget and not spending more than you can afford to payoff when you get the bill. If you are concerned about spending too much, check to see if your card will allow you to set alerts on it. If so utilize those to notify of you of certain things. If you can set up online access to the credit card account do so and check it often. Seeing your transactions will easily allow you to total your spending to help keep it under control and it will allow you to quickly spot any unauthorized transactions. The MOST important thing about any credit is to make your payments on time! Don't take any chances with your credit...pay even more frequently than once per month or set it up with auto pay to ensure that the card is paid on time.
